The Supported Independent Living space has been quietly overtaken by what we call SIL Mills — property developers and investors who spotted a financial opportunity and rebranded as disability support providers. You’ve probably seen the Instagram ads: invest in SDA housing, guaranteed returns. Behind those ads are houses filled with real people, supported by staff who were never really expected to push for anything more.
In a SIL Mill, someone can go an entire week without leaving the house — and that suits the roster just fine.
Then there are the large, established providers. Institutional. Hard to reach. A thousand employees and not one person who knows your name.
Neither model was built with you in mind.
What we know: Most SIL accommodation sits in outer suburbs chosen for cheap land prices, not quality of life. Participants are placed in homes based on vacancy, not fit. And too often, the line between the house and the support gets blurred — people assume SIL is about the property. It isn’t.
